Be a Duck Cheerleader - Program Overview

The following is a brief overview of the U of O cheerleading program:

Head Coach: Laraine Raish
Assistant Coach and Choreographer: Corine Lewis
Partner Stunt Coach: Rob Rivas
Asst. Coaches: Tori Klein, Julie Kaanapu, Jamie Fryback, Matt Newton

Stunt Squad: 14 stunt couples
Dance Squad: 15 women

Expectations and Scholarship Opportunities:

  • All cheerleaders will be assigned to various volleyball matches, wrestling matches, and men’s and women’s basketball games.
  • All cheerleaders will participate in home football games.
  • Coaches will select a cheerleading team combining 12 stunters and dancers who will travel to all away football games.
  • Any team member who exceeds the standards set by the head coach will be eligible for partial scholarships ranging from $500.00 - $2,500.00 per year.
  • The coaches will select 20 cheerleaders who will travel to a bowl game.
  • Attend every practice, weight training session, and assigned game.
  • Social engagements, including fraternity/sorority functions will not be considered an excused absence.
  • Athletic code will be signed and followed.
  • Fund raising and promotional appearances are required.
  • Community service is required.

Minimum tryout requirements for all cheerleaders:

  • You must be admitted to the University of Oregon before auditions begin.
  • You must earn and maintain a minimum 2.25 accumulative grade average.

Men:

  • Toss hands, toss hands extension, liberty
  • Good motion technique
  • Tumbling is encouraged
  • Clean-cut appearance and good character
  • Athletic ability and strength will be considered for potential in cheerleading for those men new to cheerleading.

Women Stunters:

  • Good rhythm, good dance ability, well groomed, good character
  • Excellent cheer motion technique
  • Standing back handspring (unspotted on basketball floor)
  • Proportioned body, very toned
  • Perform single-base extension, liberty, stretch, etc.

Dancers:

  • Excellent dance ability (jazz, funk, hip-hop, leaps, turns)
  • Strong motion technique
  • Well groomed, good character, very toned, proportioned height to weight
  • Tumbling is encouraged

Tryout dates:

April 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 2009. Video tapes are accepted, but your physical presence is best. Cuts made Wednesday and Thursday. Finals on Friday.

Tryout Preparation:

There will be two opportunities prior to tryouts to attend stunt and dance clinics to prepare you for collegiate cheerleading. All details can be found on the Tryout Clinics page.

Incentives:

  • Nike apparel, including game uniforms, warm-ups, sweats, shirts, shoes, shorts, bags, jackets
  • Study table with tutors and computers provided free of charge
  • Trainer and doctor
  • Two tickets for family members per game or match
  • Scholarship awards based on coaches’ selection
  • All travel paid, including daily per diem
